This is for the veteran area. I owe an apology to everyone. My memory banks are not what they used to be. I posted earlier about a memorial for Fred Graten on the hanger in Santa Ana. It was his photo as aircrewman of the month for his squadron. He had already left for Vietnam when I saw it. Again, my apologies for the error.
Also, if you can fix it Jody, it would be appreciated. Fred was a Marine not in the Army as listed. All due respect to my Army brethren. I had a long phone conversation with Steve Sparling last night and he set me straight. He would like you to put his name in the Veterans section.
Keep up the great work,   David Gregory.......11/09/09

David,  Thank you for the up-date.  Hope to see you at the 45th!!!   Jodi   11/10/09

Signed up before graduation under the delayed entry program and was in boot camp within a week after graduating. Served three years (two tours)including the Tet Offensive, the DaNang ammunition blow-up and other wonders. I was at the gathering when Fred Graten's daughter was introduced to his past several years back. She has many of his characteristics. . . . Steve Cutting 04/26/2007

Fred Graten and I joined the Marines together under the delayed entry program.  I went  early and he waited.  By the time I returned from Vietnam in Oct. 67 and reported to MCAF Santa Ana, Fred had already died.  There was a memorial on the bulkhead of hanger one for him.  It was a real shock to see that.  I went to electronics school and he went to helicopter mechanics school which was shorter so we ended up in country about the same time and didn't know it.  He had been at Santa Ana for a short time and I believe he shipped out with a squadron from there but I am not sure.

FOSBURY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF WORLD OLYMPIANS ASSOCIATION

Colorado Springs, Colo -- Former Medford High track and field great Dick Fosbury has been elected president of the World Olympians Association.

Fosbury, a 1965 graduate of Medford who now lives in Ketchum, Idaho, won the high jump at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

The announcement was made by the United States Olympic Committee following the fourth general assembly last week of the WOA at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fosbury will serve a four-year term as head of the worldwide Olympian organization

" I am thrilled and honored to be elected to this position with the World Olympians Association," said Fosbury.  "I am committed to work hard and with my best efforts to build this association and develop a new strong relationship with the International Olympic Committee and the federations."

Fosbury revolutionized the high jump with the creation of what is now known as the "Fosbury Flop," which became the standard approach for most hight jumpers after his success with the technique.  Fosbury is currently an officer with the U.S. Olympians Association.

Fosbury replaces Dr. Pal Schmitt from Hungary, who served as president of the WOA for the last eight years.  Under Dr. Schmitt's leadership, the number of memeber associations in the WOA grew from 45 associations to 128.

Special thanks to classmates who have sent additional financial support.
